Correlation between Digestion & Acne

If you have tried all sorts of external remedies for your acne (i.e. skincare, laser treatments etc) but is still suffering from acne, the acne might be caused by poor digestion.

Poor digestion is caused by the disability to digest our food thoroughly, thus creating toxins & contribute to the load of bad bacteria in our system.

How Do You Know If You Have Digestive Acne?

In order to determine this, try asking yourself the below questions:

Do you suffer from indigestion / bloated stomach after meals frequently?
Do you visit the toilet less than once a day?
Are you suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?
Are you facing Asthma / Sinus Issues?
Do you have a thick white coating on your tongue?
Do you have under-eye dark circles?
Acne Face Mapping - Does your Acne form mostly within the Digestive Zone of your Face?

If your answer is YES for more than 3 for the above questions, you might be down with Digestive Acne.

How to Cure?

Now that you are pretty sure that your acne is caused by digestive issues, you might want to explore ways to cure your acne via suggested methods below.

#1: Try the Food Elimination Method

You might want to experiment by cutting down / eliminating the lis of foods that might cause poor digestion:

Foods that are highly processed / contain refined carbohydrates & sugar
Dairy products such as Milk, Cheese, Butter, Yoghurt, Ice-Cream etc
Gluten (can cause inflammation in your intestinal tract / gut)
Eggs
Soy
Alcohol
Caffeine i.e. coffee / tea
Carbonated Drinks i.e. soda

#2: Exercise Regularly

Try to move around as much as possible on your free time as it is helps to boost your metabolism and help circulate nutrients to your body to push toxins out. Exercising also helps reduce stress, making you more youthful and rejuvenated!

Also, as mentioned in my earlier blog post, exercising & sweating it out helps reduce whiteheads too!

#3: Stomach Acid Test

You can test to see if you stomach has enough acid to digest your food by drinking Beet Root juice.

Observe the colour of your urine next. If it comes out red / pink, you have low stomach acids.

Alternatively, you can also go to your doctor to have the test done in the laboratory.

You might consider on improving your stomach acid levels.

#4: Eat Whole Foods

Try eating whole foods that are rich in fruits & vegetables and introducing nuts and seeds into your diet.

#5: Switching Over to Coconut Oil

Instead of using vegetable oils, switch over to an Organic Virgin Coconut Oil.

Coconut Oil contains a type of saturated fat named "Medium Chain Triglycerides" (MCTs) which are easily digested by our bodies. Hence it is a great alternative to people who have problem digesting fats.

In addition to the above, Coconut Oil contains Lauric Acid which has anti-fungal & antimicrobial properties to maintain normal gut floral and immunity. Not to mention, it helps alleviate constipation too.

#6: Take Dietary Supplements

Below are some dietary supplements you can take to improve your digestion & skin. Do consult your doctor prior to taking any supplements as not all supplements might suit your body.

Probiotic: Taking probiotics help to maintain healthy gut flora & pH levels allowing our bodies to detox and absorb nutrients.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): ACV helps improve digestion by increasing production of Hydrochloric Acids (stomach acids). Try drinking a glass of water mixed with 1 teaspoon of ACV 15-20 minutes before a meal & slowing increase the quantity to see how you fare.

L-Lysine: L-Lysine is an essential amino acid that is introduced into our bodies through food or supplements as it cannot be produced by our bodies naturally. It helps to build anti-resistant skin cells which is beneficial for acne sufferers.

Plant-Based Enzymes: Taking digestive enzymes is beneficial for nutrient absorption for beautiful skin. Digestive enzymes help to promote better digestion and aids with constipation as well.
